A Message From Our CEO
2020 was a year like no other! After a strong start to the year, the COVID-19 pandemic turned our world upside down. However, the vast majority of our members “stayed with us” and greatly aided our recovery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our Y operated under a three-phase plan:
- React and Respond (March – June)
- Reopen and Recover (July – December)
- Reimagine and Reemerge! (2021)
Although our traditional program delivery and services had to change, we stayed focused on our mission. While closed, we offered emergency child care to essential works, virtual group exercise, conducted wellness checks with our older adults and partnered to provide food and blood drives.
Once we were able to reopen, we did so with a focus on being clean, safe, and healthy and continued to add back services and programs as we were able. Our members played a huge role in our recovery by keeping their membership active so we could provide much-needed community services. Thank you!
We also renovated and expanded our Richmond County Family YMCA and renovated the locker rooms and aquatic center at our R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA. All of these new additions and renovations will improve the member experience!
Through our 17 centers, the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas provided membership and program subsidies to 56,958 families and individuals, totaling $1,563,565. This would not be possible without the support of our donors and volunteers. Thank you!
We are deeply grateful to those who have helped the YMCA accomplish so much good work in 2020 amid the pandemic. We were able to do this through the over 2,400 donors that gave over $1.4M to support our cause.
Because of you, the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas will continue to strengthen our communities in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We have been serving the Virginia Peninsulas for 125 years, and we are here for GOOD!
