Golf Programs

1st Tee Player Card

The Player Card provides each card holder the ability to play at golf courses across the peninsula at a discounted rate. Proceeds from the Player Card go solely to benefit the First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula program, which serves Newport News, Hampton, James City County, Poquoson, and York County. Your purchase helps us make a difference in the lives of those we serve through our programs.

Advanced PLAYer

This level is a continuation for 8-14 year-old participants who have completed one session of the PLAYer level and are not yet certified. We emphasize learning the rules and etiquette of the game, and on The First Tee Code of Conduct and the Nine Core Values.


Participants must be Par certified prior to taking the Birdie level. This level emphasizes goal-setting, which includes the ability to plan for the future by defining and setting reachable goals, as well as devising plans to achieve these goals and overcome challenges. Golf skills include: course management, etiquette, and advanced swing/putting skills.


Participants must be Birdie certified prior to taking Eagle level. This level focuses on wellness and health for the mind and body, conflict resolution and diversity, and it explores careers in the golf industry. Golf skills include: playing competitively, effective practice strategies, how to self-correct, and accuracy.

Girls Golf LPGA*USGA

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf provides an opportunity for girls to develop friendships and experience competition in a fun, supportive environment, preparing them for a lifetime of enjoyment of the game. This program is offered by The First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula. Participants receive the Life Skills Curriculum and progress through the PLAYer, Par, Birdie, Eagle, and Ace levels. There are special events throughout the year.

Little Linksters

Little Linksters is an introductory class for the PLAYer Level in The First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula program and is for 7-year-olds. Little Linkster’s introduces players to the game of golf using a combination of SNAG (Starting New at Golf) equipment and golf equipment. We use a variety of fun activities to emphasize learning the rules and etiquette of the game, as well as the basics of grip, stance and alignment.


Participants must be PLAYer certified prior to taking the Par level. Golf skills include: swing, grip, and stance, and introduction to match play. Life skills addressed include interpersonal communication, and self-management.


Available to participants ages 6 and 7. TARGET is an introduction to The First Tee Life Skills Experience and uses various games that focus on hand-eye coordination. This program is ideal for participants who have had little exposure to the game of golf. Participants are exposed to the six life skills presented in the acronym TARGET: Take aim, Anyone can play, Respect, Golf is a game, Enjoy Yourself, and Try it.

The First Tee Resident Camp

NEW! Swing into The First Tee experience at Camp Kekoka. Join The First Tee for a special week golf camp at Camp Kekoka along with sun, fun and water sports! Nestled on 1,000 ft. of shoreline along the Indian River and Chesapeake Bay, The First Tee camp offers a rustic camp experience for boys and girls ages 9 – 12. During daylight hours, golfers enjoy a well-rounded golf/camp experience. Golfers will have opportunities to take part in camp activities which include traditional activities like swimming, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. Songs and stories around the camp fire round out the evenings.

Summer Player Tour

NEW! Learn different golf tournament formats from Captain’s Choice to Bingo, Bango, and Bongo. Players are placed with other players to form teams; teams change daily. Players, ages 7-14, should be able to play from 150 yards to the green and keep up with the pace of play. We play three to nine holes depending on time and ability. At the conclusion of the tour, players will be treated to hot dogs, drinks and chips at Mulligan’s in the clubhouse.

Semi-Private Golf Lessons

Semi-Private golf lessons are available November through March. These lessons are available for two to three students who can attend at the same time and days. Lessons are offered by appointment only through the Director of The First Tee program. These lessons give golfers the opportunity to enhance and increase knowledge and skills in the off season.
