The YMCA of The Virginia Peninsulas Providing Emergency Child Care for Healthcare Workers

Posted on: March 22, 2020

NEWPORT NEWS — As the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas continues to support our members through virtual programs, our facilities have transitioned to support the fight against the spread of COVID-19. The Y is offering emergency child care for essential healthcare staff.

“Our mission is to serve and strengthen all in our community, and that mission is even more critical now,” said Adam Klutts, President & CEO of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas. “We’ve been working with local hospitals and agencies to understand their needs and determine how we can best support them during this time, as well as developing additional support for our entire community.”

On Tuesday, March 17, four YMCA Centers, the Hampton Family YMCA, R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA in Williamsburg, Tom & Ann Hunnicutt Family YMCA in Newport News, and the YMCA Wiley Child Development Center in Kilmarnock, began providing child care to healthcare workers from Sentara, Riverside, Bon Secours, and Hampton VA hospitals. “Our community needs as many healthcare professionals as possible to be able to work during this time. But many have young children for whom they need to care. It’s our privilege to be able to provide exceptional care for their children so they can work without worry,” said Klutts.

The Y will be adding care for school-aged children of essential healthcare responders. This limited service is only offered to those critical emergency staff who need child care so they can work their assigned shift.
