Welcome to Luter Family YMCA

The Luter Family YMCA provides a safe, family-oriented environment, and a gathering place for thousands of kids, families, seniors and individuals. In its previous life, part of the Luter Family YMCA was Smithfield High School. It was leased to the YMCA by the County of Isle of Wight in 1995. It was renovated in 2004 and again in 2012 with the expansion of the Wellness Center, Child Watch and Group Exercise rooms.

  • What inspired you to become part of the YMCA community? Everyone has a story, and giving them a place to tell their story really inspired me to shift from my work in Collegiate Recreation to non-profit work with the YMCA. Whether taking kids back to school shopping or teaching someone how to swim, our mission ensures we are a place for all.
  • What are some of your most significant accomplishments at the YMCA? I was honored as the 2023 YMCAVP Director of the Year with my work at YMCA/APYC Camp Kekoka. We started an Outdoor Education Program that allows our local after-school YMCA kids to try something different. In 2024, we also secured a novel grant to start an adaptive paddling program called Paddling For All, which gives the residents of local assisted living communities a fun day out of the water.
  • What are your hobbies/interests outside of work? I love being outside and participating in any outdoor activity, such as rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc. I also love trying new things and meeting new people, whether it is at a local farmers market or just at a local coffee shop. I also have two fur babies that keep me busy and entertained.

Give to the Y

When you give to the Y, you support programs and services that help kids succeed, prevent drowning, prepare teens for life and help people grow healthier in spirit, mind, and body. The Y is needed now more than ever to meet the evolving needs of our community.
